A large group of members started out the year with a memorable get-together. Speakers Kristen Tignac from Simi Valley Youth Services and Chris Sullivan from the Minor Parent program at Apollo High School, gave information about 2 of the Youth Services in our Community. We also learned of the Simi Valley Tutoring Program, and were asked for volunteers to help in this program. Over 12 interest groups were presented for sign-up for the coming year. Our next Meeting is October 27th, where we hear all about our 4 Tech trek camp attendees.

A wine and chocolate tasting social was held recently. It was a chance for 2 new members to get acquainted, along with a fun and interesting get together. We were treated to many tasting choices of chocolate and a variety of good wines served to us by one of our husband sommeliers. Prizes were given to those that knew the most trivia questions on wine and chocolate. Click on any photo below to enlarge.

Simi Branch members and several former Tech Trek girls participating in the Simi Valley Days Parade

On September 22, 2012, AAUW Simi Valley participated in the Simi Valley Days Parade. The parade is designed to show off local organizations, youth groups, sports clubs and businesses.

Simi Valley Days was borne out of the community festival Pioneer Days, which began in 1933. This is the 25th consecutive year of the Simi Valley Days carnival. The fair also serves as an early birthday celebration for the city, which was incorporated Oct. 10, 1969.

Simi Valley Branch sent 3 highly eligible girls to camp at Santa Barbara this year. They also had 3 branch members that served as dorm moms for the week.

Campers are assigned math and/or science core classes that they attend daily. Girls also take shorter math and science-related classes and off-campus field trips that encourage maximum interaction and instruction.

Most important is the university campus experience. No matter what campus they attend, campers will have the opportunity to live the life of a college student for the week under the careful supervision of camp staff. They also will interact with women who model a high degree of science, mathematics or computer expertise as part of their daily lives.

Tech Trek is designed to provide every camper with exposure to all core subjects taught, as well as a selection of rotating labs designed to explore individual specialties more deeply. Hands-on activities in core classes, rotating labs and field trips at Tech Trek camps help to make math and science fun as well as educational. Instructors include credentialed middle school teachers and women currently engaged professionally in math, science or technology fields.

Evening programs include a variety of potential career areas.
